New Years in Leavenworth

With this being my first birthday and New Years in Portland I decided I was not going to sit in my apartment and have a dance party for one to Taylor Swift and Beyonce (and yes it was seriously considered). New Years is always overhyped, overpriced and underwhelming in my opinion. So this year I was invited to go away for the weekend to celebrate my birthday and New Years in Leavenworth, Washington. If I’ve learned anything in my 34 years it’s that when you get invited on a getaway with someone who’s company you enjoy, you go!

I’ll never refuse a good ocean view but there is something about the trees, water and air of a mountain town that instantly put my soul at peace. Add a fun main street, great company in an adorably romantic bed and breakfast and you’ve pretty much hit the perfect New Year’s Eve trifecta.

Leavenworth, WA is a Bavarian village in the Cascade Mountains of Washington state. It takes about 2.5 – 3 hours from Seattle and about 6 from Portland if you’re driving.(photo from the town cam)

All you really need is one day on the main street of Leavenworth to shop, explore, eat and drink drink drink! The rest of the time can be spent in the relaxing splendor that is Run of the River Inn.

Run of the River Inn and Refuge.

There really aren’t enough good things I can say about this Bed and Breakfast. Honestly, it completely made the whole trip. Everything was so well done that I spent most of the time really amazed at how much I loved it all. I grew up in a family that vacationed a lot so I’ve seen quite a bit of the good and bad when it comes to lodging. Bed and breakfasts specifically are hard to impress me with, mainly because of the decor – it never seems to quite fit together. Run of the River really takes it to another level of style and comfort. It is the quintessential romantic mountain cabin Inn.

When we entered the room I found a bottle of champagne and chocolates that my mom surprised me with and had arranged with the owners prior to our arrival! It was so nicely done and the perfect way to start the trip. I’m a sucker for personal touches so the fact that they added a little birthday note really made it feel so welcoming.

Every morning breakfast is served at 9am. I sent in a gluten-free and dairy free request but always bring some snacks in case people can’t accomodate. The owners went above and beyond to not only provide options for me to eat but delicious ones at that. There were about 10 other people, all couples, who were at the table with us. Meeting new people, especially before coffee, can always be a little awkward for me. The thing I really enjoyed was most of the people had been to the Inn before and gave us some great recommendations. I actually really enjoyed meeting and chatting with all of the people who stayed at the Inn that weekend, which was a really nice addition to the trip.

Being that we stayed on New Year’s Eve weekend and that, as mentioned above, I’m not a huge fan of crazy New Year’s Eve activities (oh and that there was apparently a VERY important Seahawks game on) we didn’t really have any plans for the night. So when the owner mentioned at breakfast that he was going to have some champagne around the fire pit that evening we decided to partake. It actually ended up being one of the best New Year’s Eve to date. We watched the Seahawks, lose unfortunately, met some lovely people, drank our weight in champagne and rang in the New Year in bed, watching a drunk and hilarious Anderson Cooper from New York.

Ravenwood Lodge

We stayed in the Great Northwest room located on the first floor of the main cabin. I can’t believe I didn’t take a picture of how great this room was – I did video on snapchat that I of course didn’t save! But here is a photo from the website to give you an idea. The only thing I would mention is that it is directly next to the dining room and kitchen so if you are a late sleeper you will hear people in the mornings getting their coffee etc.

Features of this room: large bathtub, sitting area, large patio, heated bathroom floors, mini fridge and a fireplace.

I definitely cannot wait to return and see Leavenworth and Run of the River in the Summer and Fall!

Thanks for a great start to the New Year Leavenworth – until next time!
