Once upon a time I used to get all dolled up for a plane ride. These days, I know better. Now I look at women teetering in their heels trying to lift their bag into the overhead bin and I see a version of myself from yesteryear.
If I have to go straight from the airport to a meeting or event, I bring a carryon dress bag and change at the airport once we land. With the chance of a delay or other unavoidable circumstances that occur when traveling, comfort is the most important thing. That doesn’t mean you can’t do comfort in style.
Here are some key things to keep in mind:
- Find a comfortable pair of jeans or leggings. Anything with a generous amount of stretch so that when you’re lifting things the waistline stays in place but allows for plenty of movement in the legs and booty.
- Layer. Temperatures fluctuate so much in the airport and airplane. One minute you are nipping out and the you’re trying to remove any layer of clothing that will come off and still be acceptable to be seen in public. I like to wear a tank top and tie a hoodie or flannel around my waist to have ready to throw on at a moments notice.
- Wear comfortable shoes that are easy to take off and put on. Even in TSA PreCheck they will make you take your shoes off if they have any metal on them. I have gotten many dirty looks by being “that one moron” who disrupted the flow of the PreCheck line. I like slip on sneakers with pedi socks when I don’t want them to show because nobody wants to walk on the dirty airport floors that have been frequented by sweaty feet of the masses.
- Avoid a duffle bag and go for the backpack. It helps take the heavy weight off of one should and distributes it evenly on your body. Keep only essential things you need for the flight in here such as headphones and your iPad so you don’t weigh it down too much. Otherwise you will destroy your back as a whole and pay for it the rest of the trip.
No matter where you’re off to on your next adventure keep these tips in mind and enjoy the ride!
